Hurt/Comfort Exchange is an 18+ ao3 based gift exchange for all fandoms, focusing on ships and gen combos. Participants must create either a story of at least 1000 words, or a piece of artwork that is not on lined paper and is at minimum clean linework that is at least 500x500 pixels. In return, they will receive a story of at least 1000 words, or a piece of artwork that is not on lined paper and is at minimum clean linework that is at least 500x500 pixels.
You must be 18+ to sign up, as requests may include content not suitable for minors.
You cannot sign up with multiple accounts belonging to the same person. You will be asked to delete all additional accounts.
To sign up you must request a minimum of one fandom with one relationship per fandom, and a minimum of one freeform tag. As well as offer a minimum of one fandom with one relationship per fandom and at least one freeform tag. You can request 20 freeforms in the Additional Tags field and then 20 more in the Optional Tags field (though they must be copy and pasted from the tagset, as Optional Tags does not dropdown from the tagset) for a total of 40 freeforms max. You may request the same fandom multiple times.
The exception to the request minimum that if you are pinch hit with less than three unique fandom requests you are not guaranteed a gift. You will be asked if you wish to add additional requests in order to guarantee a gift.
You must be able to create a work for someone else in the exchange. If you are not able to match to and create for anyone you'll be contacted after signups closed and asked if you wish to drop out or add more offers. We encourage you to look through other people's requests before signups close to make sure you can create for someone.
As this is a hurt/comfort themed exchange, your relationship tags will indicate which character(s) are hurt and are in need of comfort and the freeforms will be for specifying the kinds of hurts, types of comforts, and various scenarios you would like to offer or request. If you aren't sure what specifics you would like, the tagset will include "Hurt/Comfort" as an option.
Archive Warnings are to be considered Opt-In rather than opt out for DNWs.
No AI generated content.
This exchange has four stages: Nominations, Signups, Assignments, Reveals
Information on Nominations can be found here.
Signup Information
A form will be available on ao3 to submit the fandoms, relationships, and freeforms you wish to create and/or receive fanworks for.
There will also be an option to select if you wish to receive fanfic and/or fanart and if you wish to offer fanfic and/or fanart.
You have the option to create a letter. A letter is hosted off ao3 anywhere that is publicly viewable so you may provide additional information, likes, dislikes, prompts, art references, or anything else that you feel would be helpful for your fanwork gift creator. Please have your letter finished and viewable within a week of assignments going out.
You have the option to provide additional details on ao3. Please use this box to provide any Do Not Wants you may have, as only DNWs included in your ao3 signup will be enforced. A DNW is anything that would ruin your gift and you absolutely do not wish to receive. Your fanwork creator is required to avoid your DNWs to the best of their ability. You can also include any likes, prompts, or additional details you feel would be helpful for your fanwork gift creator.
DNWs should be clear, free of judgement, and not box your creator in or provide conflict with the request. Bad-faith DNWs will not be enforced, such as requesting a canon m/m pairing and DNWing m/m and genderbends.
Archive Warnings are considered Opt-In. This means that unless someone has indicated through tags or optional details that they would like a work that includes explicit Underage sex, Graphic Violence, explicit Non-Consensual sex, or Major Character Death then it should be treated as though they've DNWed those things. You may, of course, DNW them as well for additional clarity but please do not gift these things without an indication that your recipient wants them.
If you request Character /& Group any characters within that group will count as fulfilling the request. You may put preferences in your optional details, but if you strongly prefer specific characters please request those instead.
If you request Character /& Any then any character fitting the Any will count as fulfilling the request. Any can have restrictions baked in, such as Any Female Character. Any Nonhuman Jedi. Any Hero. Any Villain.
Do not request fandoms, relationships, or tags not in the tagset using optional details except in addition to your request. You must be willing to accept the fandom, relationships, and tags you signed up with in a work.
You will be able to edit your signup until signups close.
Assignment Information
After you sign up and assignments go out you will match on at least one relationship and freeform and you are only obligated to create a fanwork for one of the requested relationships and freeforms. It does not have to be the ones you matched on, just ones that they are requesting. Your assignment should go out after March 15th. You will be required to submit a fanwork that satisfies the minimum requirements (though you are welcome to go over the minimum!) by May 13th.
Your fanwork must match one requested Fandom and Relationship tag, including which character is specified to be hurt in the work or if both/all characters are specified to be hurt. Both/all means all requested character are hurt, not either character hurt.
Your fanwork must match your recipient's requested Medium. If they've requested both you are welcome to submit one of either medium. You are not required to make both.
For Medium: Fanfiction - a story of at least 1000 (1k) words
For Medium: Fanart - a piece of artwork that is not on lined paper and is at minimum clean linework that is at least 500x500 pixels.
Your fanwork must also exclude any DNWs that are included in the details of someone's ao3 signup.
If possible, include the freeform tag you are writing for in the work tags or in author note to have your work approved more quickly.
If you cannot fulfill your assignment, ao3 has the option to default on your assignment. Please try to do so as soon as you are certain you need to so that your former assignment can go out for pitch hit.
Pinch hits are assignments that are in need of a fanwork creator. You do not have to be signed up to accept a pitch hit, but you do need to submit it on time and meet the minimum requirements.
Treats are entirely optional additional fanworks that are gifted to people signed up in the exchange based on their requests. They do not have to meet the minimum, but they do have to respect DNWs. Please indicate in your signup's Optional Details if you want or do not want treats. If someone does not indicate either way treat at your own risk as your intended recipient may have gift works disabled.
Works Without A Recipient but using tag/pairings in the tagset and following the theme are allowed and considered gifts to the collection.
The Fandom, Relationship, and Freeform used must be visible when the work is submitted. The freeform can be in a author note or tagged in the work itself. The tag can be deleted before the collection goes live, but after the work is accepted into the collection.
Reveals
When submitted, your fanwork will initially show up as Mystery Work. You will be able to edit it, but no one but the exchange mods can view it until it goes live.
On the Story Reveal date the collection will go live and the works will be visible, but they will all be by Anonymous. Any comment you make on your own work will be by Anonymous Creator.
On the Author Reveal date authors will go from Anonymous to your username and your work will be listed in your ao3 profile. If you have left comments as Anonymous Creator they will automatically change to your username.

Date: 2022-03-14 04:41 pm (UTC)The best way is to look through Requests and see what people are asking for to tailor your offers.
If the only people requesting A/B (hurt A) have freeforms you could write for, you can put Any and just keep an eye near the end to make sure no one signs up with an A/B (hurt A) request you couldn't write. Or, alternately and safer, if there's three people requesting A/B (hurt A) and various freeforms, you can pick one freeform from each of their requests and put it in offers. You only need to match on one!

Date: 2023-02-09 09:48 pm (UTC)I can't tell if this example is listing these as separate things to not DNW or if this is one entire example, because I don't really understand how you could even request a m/m pairing and then say "but no m/m and genderbends" because uh... then you can't have a fic??? If you don't want genderbends for a m/m pairing that would make it m/f or f/f then it HAS to be m/m...? Right...? So lost 😭 As a trans person who likes m/m but doesn't read genderbends or trans fics because hello dysphoria city, is that going to be considered bad-faith to ask for m/m but DNW genderbends/trans? Not sure yet whether I want to commit to doing this exchange, but I do want to make sure whether I'm able to DNW what I need for my mental health before I put serious consideration into it. Thanks!

Date: 2024-03-04 02:44 pm (UTC)We do ask that for time sake you let us know in some form or fashion which Freeform you're creating. It can be in optional tags, author notes, you can delete it before reveals. Otherwise you'll likely get an e-mail asking for clarification so we know what to check for in your work. As people can request up to 40 freeforms, it can be difficult to go back and forth between the tag list and the work trying to determine where the freeform is, especially with longer fics.

Date: 2024-06-11 01:18 am (UTC)This didn't come up with my assignment, but I'm in treat writing mode now and am seeing appealing optional tags which give me ideas that don't necessarily also go with one of the main freeforms requested. Can a treat only match something in the optional tags?

Sorry, not sure how to word this less confusingly!)
