Superstition and the Sea

July is National Learn to Sail month! Why not start by reading up on some weird sailing superstitions? For example:

Daring Death: Flowers, coffins, and ministers

Why have everything you need to host a funeral on your ship if you don’t want a funeral on your ship? Duh. For the same reason, a ship’s bell sounding on its own or even a wine glass ringing are unlucky because they sound like church bells. A possibly related superstition warns against bringing black suitcases on board, and some sailors expand this to all luggage. It might be that black bags look like body bags, but nobody’s really sure on the origin of this one.

Visit my blog for more sea superstitions and some watery writing prompts, such as:

Love wins. Ministers and flowers don’t only mean funerals. So what if you had a ship’s captain who noticed too late that some idiot brought on board the rose his sweetheart gave him, and some other sailor happens to have a degree in divinity. You can throw the rose overboard, but sailors, not so much. (At least, you’re not supposed to.) Could a ship beat its bad luck by instead using the rose and minister to stage a wedding? Sailors’ superstitions are clear about forbidding women on board, for various reasons, including misogyny and also misogyny. But maybe a couple of mates might not mind being…mates? At least long enough to go through the ceremony and cancel the bad luck. Fake marriage trope, anyone?

Contraband

Last night I finished and posted a fic with a newish-to-me ship: Hux/Dopheld Mitaka. Although I glanced along the side of this pairing in Between Alpha Shifts, last October, that fic only had Hux figuring out that he had tender feelings and inviting Mitaka to his quarters later; nothing more happened between them. This one has more smut.

The fic starts out funny, and turns angsty, then tender, with a sweet Happy For Now ending.

CONTRABAND: ACCESS DENIED
Author: ArtemisDart
Fandom: Star Wars Sequel Trilogy
Ship: Armitage Hux/Dopheld Mitaka
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Wordcount: 5,294

Summary: General Hux is aghast at the truly horrendous pornography coming out of the New Republic.

Unfortunately, he takes it a bit too seriously...

But will Lieutenant Mitaka hold it against him?

I gave the fic to irrationalgame and JayneSilver, who were the two people in the Discord chat coming up with hilariously bad descriptions of sex, which I used in the first part of the story to horrify General Hux. It was hilarious to imagine him scandalized and aghast at all the terrible sex scenes coming out of the New Republic.

Fandom: Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
Pairing/Characters: Kimberly/Tommy
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 4,466
Summary: Shortly after breaking up with Tommy, Kimberly comes down with a strange illness.

Hanahaki + Kim/Tommy post breakup is such a great combo and I loved the way it was handled.

Title: and swear, a taste of sweetness to soothe your soul
Author: [archiveofourown.org profile] forsworn
Fandom: The Princess Diaries (Movies)
Pairing/Characters: Mia/Nicholas
Rating: Teen
Word Count: 3863
Summary: Mia's been working too hard, but she's determined to enjoy her day off with Nicholas - and even if her exhausted body lets her down, Nicholas and his gourmet cooking skills can still lift her spirits.

This was so soft and sweet. I love Nicholas taking care of Mia and the banter/dynamic was perfect. :D

Creative: Write from the perspective of a house or other location.

These guys, MCR! I've been enjoying watching footage and seeing new photos from their concert so much. My love isn't as intense as it was in my height of bandom days, but it's still there, and I still think Mikey is hot like fire.

Seeing him with his bro, how happy he looked throughout that surreal, weird and yet awesome show, well it made me smile, too. Also, comments from Gabe and Travis on Mikey's Insta post, it was like being thrown back in time in the best way.

So, lets go old skool and have a top ten plus four picspam. behind here )

One Week Down...

My first Officially Super-Busy Week at Work (TM) went better than expected. I have a second super-busy week this week, and then hopefully work will quiet down. Unfortunately, the week after this is a competition week, so that will be busy for entirely different reasons. But after that I am going to have a break and look very much forward to it! 😊

Here is where I stand, fandom-wise:

  • Exchanges due in May/June ([community profile] hurtcomfortex, [community profile] pickmeupexchange, [community profile] idproquo, [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles, [community profile] diegetic_exchange + mystery pinch-hits and treats): I am going to move [community profile] fandom5k out to July/August because otherwise this bullet will linger through the end of July. So now this is still done at 11/11, and the final reveals have happened! Here are the things I wrote:
  • Exchanges due in July/August ([community profile] fandom5k now, [community profile] caseficexchange, [community profile] nonconex, [community profile] justmarriedexchange, Terrible Temperature Troubles flash + mystery pinch-hits and treats + future stuff): With [community profile] fandom5k moved over, I am now at 5/7. I did, indeed, finish The Shiny Thing That Ate My Brain last week, hooray! I didn't get any of my other assignments done, but I did get a start on one of them. My goal this week is to finish at least one of the remaining two, and crystallize my ideas for the other one. I'm also eyeing several pinch hits, although I'm not going to set a goal for any of them while my schedule is so busy.

  • Also, I got two gifts for Temperature Flash! I love that one of them is heat-focused and the other is cold-focused, the best of both worlds:

    • The Beast and I Are One: Hannibal/Will post-fall escaping from Chesapeake Bay and huddling together for warmth while wet and naked, YUM!

    • Too Hot for Work: Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan trying to stay cool in the summer heat by taking advantage of Shen Wei's naturally cool body, also YUM!

  • Potentials for July/August...and even September/October: I see some things shaping up on the distant horizon! As predicted, I skipped [community profile] raremaleslashex (although may check out pinch hits), and I think I'm sitting out [community profile] iddyiddybangbang. However! The following things are all coming up and look relevant to my interests: [community profile] enemiestoloversex (I've already nominated), Grief/Mourning Flash, [personal profile] classicfilmex, [community profile] fallingforyoufallexchange, [community profile] ficinabox(!!!), & [community profile] seasonsofdrabbles. There's also [community profile] rarepairexchange, although that's more debatable, and then I remain vaguely tempted by [community profile] scaldinghotcibingo. So I should keep myself busy for the foreseeable future. 😊

  • Once again again again, no updates on Femslash Salad Bar (shocking!).

  • I'm now 1/4 through BNHA S3. I'm going to hit a problem with my current episode source at the halfway mark, but I think I've found a back-up solution. Aiming to watch more of this, this week.

  • I still haven't picked up any books. I'm waiting for the next item in my library queue to come up, unless I change my mind before then.

Goals for this week: 1) Survive work moar, 2) Finish 1 of my remaining assignments, 3) Figure out my other assignment, 4) Watch some BNHA, 5) ???, 6) Profit!

There's no way to know which user subscribed to which work, although I can guess that a lot of my fellow Gingerpilot enjoyers may be subscribed to the two Gingerpilot WIPs I have at the moment.

Subscriptions aren't something I pay particularly close attention to. I don't track them in my database, because I'd have to harvest those numbers manually at regular intervals -- there's no email that notifies me about them -- and I don't want to take on the extra work. Still, a nice round number like 800 deserves at least a post about it. :)

New fandoms

I've been getting into two new fandoms recently; one old and huge, and one new and small.

Warhammer 40K is a whole world. I've only read two books in the world so far: Helsreach, where I got the ship Merek Grimaldus / Andrej Valatok, and Pariah, which is the first of a trilogy. I have the next book in the series and need to read it as well. So far I don't have any good ships from this cast of characters.

I don't like all the war in Warhammer, which is fairly awkward, since 'war' is right there in the name. Reading scene after scene of 'good guys' pulping orks was just not very much fun for me; I only made it through Helsreach because I'd heard that ship I mentioned existed in the book (it did... barely...), and I wanted to have enough background information to write about them.

Although I don't like the 'war' part, I do enjoy themes of ruined, noble men suffering bravely and dying for a noble cause. I also enjoy the obvious Catholic symbolism, and everything that comes with it. It's easy to weave in themes of vows of chastity, sexual guilt, religious guilt, sacrificing one's self for a greater good, and so on and so forth. I love that stuff! Plus, I have always enjoyed partners of very different sizes where the smaller one is in charge.

Then, just a few days ago, my husband and I started watching Murderbot. It's an adaptation of some books by Martha Wells that I haven't read, but I've heard a lot about it and I've seen the IP pop up in exchange after exchange, so I thought I'd give it a try.

I LOVE IT SO MUCH! It has so many themes that I gravitate towards in stories -- hurt/comfort, noble self-sacrifice, philosophical ponderings about what it means to be human, a large cast of well-drawn characters, a dystopian setting with flashes of hope if you look for them hard enough, cutting social commentary -- oh, and hot people. The fact that Murderbot is played by Alexander Skarsgård is certainly no downside. (His father, Stellan Skarsgård, played Luthen in Andor -- such a great role.)

There's even recognition in the story of polyamory and other alternate family arrangement styles being commonly practiced in Preservation Alliance. There's even a poly triad forming -- well, maybe -- out of three of the experts on the mission. It's honestly great to see some scrap of poly awareness in media. Too often, it's treated as harem building on the part of the man, or as inherently toxic and destructive. As someone who's been practicing poly for almost twenty years, I love to see more realistic and positive representations in media.

So, even though my husband and I are only up through episode nine, I've started reading Murderbot (TV) fan fiction on AO3. There are only 80 fics, and many of them are quite short, and were obviously written without all the information that later episodes revealed. There's room for me to contribute, if I can think of any original ideas that haven't already been done!

Part 2 here

The weather clears in two days as Qi Shaoshang had thought it might, and as the morning of the second day arrives he makes ready to leave.

While Di Feijing knew the day had to come, he finds himself feeling a little lost, even rather melancholy about how things will be from now on. The lack of plans of his own, the directionlessness of it all, of a future, seemingly without purpose, feels like an increasingly heavy weight.

Not that he will admit that to anyone. Not that he will even permit them to guess.

I've had a very lazy day today as James has been off doing a community overtime event for work. So, I've been tidying up indoors, given the garden a good soak and got caught up online. Well, the DW posts anyway, I've still got so much TV to watch, and yes, I know, the tiniest violin needed for me.

Tomorrow we're taking my MiL out for a belated birthday lunch, so I've enjoyed the quiet do very little day. Even enjoying the sunshine and the heat, due to not having to actually do anything but waft around in it.

Sunshine revival challenge prompt now.

The first thing that came to mind here was beach sandwiches. Which were the chopped salad cream, egg and tomato sandwiches my mam used to make for us when I was a kidlet. We'd head off to the beach, and have a picnic, and the sandwiches were always soggy, flat, and always had sand in them, no matter how carefully they were handled. But, at the same time, they always tasted delicious, especially so as mam used to buy a carton of chips to share while eating them.

A more up to date summer food. I was in the garden picking strawberries, raspberries, chillis and pea pods yesterday. There aren't that many of them as I only have a small garden, and the tomatoes haven't started to ripen yet. But, I thought the bowl looked pretty.

Finished reading Gay Berlin yesterday yay!

I'm just gonna say, one does not need to time travel there. Or travel to Berlin point. What happened there in the late 19th century-early 1930s is the same that's happening everywhere today. History is a circle, for better or for worse (mostly worse).

And speaking of circles, I never fully read Conrad Veidt's Wikipedia article because some sources seemed iffy. But good to know that, thanks to unpublished correspondence, some of Connie's belongings (cigarette case and lighter) are at the Margaret Herrick Library, plus the notebooks a fan gave to Lili. Hopefully they won't be burned.

Hi all
I did try and read some entries this week but it's so hot that I'm barely catching up.
I've edited and posted some fic to AO3 but not much else lately.
Have a photo edit of two pics I took this week. We have a pair of juvenile robins regularly feeding and bathing in the garden! They have golden speckles at present with one starting to get the red breast feathers. Plus a picture of one of the adult robins who visits along with the blackbirds, sparrows, and bluetits.
I don't have pics but we've also got hawks, neighbour who did get photos thinks peregrine falcons. They shriek and call and can sometimes be glimpsed wheeling across the sky.
